The Great Afterlife Debate - Michael Shermer v. Deepak Chopra

From Deepak Chopra's side of the debate:
"There are astonishing results in this area. One of the most famous, performed at the engineering department at Princeton and validated many times over, asked ordinary people to sit in the room with a random number generator. As the machine printed out a random series of 0s and 1s, the subjects were instructed to try to make it produce more zeroes. They didn't touch the machine but only willed it to deviate from randomness. Did they succeed? Absolutely. Did other identical or similar experiments succeed? Over and over. Does Shermer even touch on this matter, so crucial to my argument? No."

The Lazy Man's guide to Enlightenment - Full text and Audiobook read by author.

"Expansion in love is an action that is available to every being in the universe all the time. A willing awareness will take us to heaven, a loving attitude will make us free. Nothing else controls our fate. Good or bad behavior is secondary. Whatever you are doing, love yourself for doing it. Whatever you are thinking, love yourself for thinking it. Love is the only dimension that needs to be changed. If you are not sure how it feels to be loving, love yourself for not being sure of how it feels. There is nothing on earth more important than the love which conscious beings feel towards each other, whether or not it is ever expressed."

Death and Settling for Less

"The passage of time, the god of the Second Law, requires no meaning; and so it bears no meaning. None whatsoever. Meaning-making is confined to its makers, and with their extinction, meaning disappears. Itâ€s no longer necessary. Infinity does not require it. Only human beings ask the question, 'Why is there something, and not nothing?' Infinity is in-itself. It requires no outside referent.

The same Second Law exists as a wall before our last-ditch fantasy of escaping the planet. We will never escape the planet. We will die here. Every last one of us will die, and when the last of us goes, we will still be living on earth. You who read this now will not care when that happens, because you will have already ceased to exist - as will I.

Our vessel is so small, and the ocean is so vast.

What's the point, then, after all?

Well, the point is, even in our universal non-significance, we do exist. It matters a great deal, in the material reality of things, that we are composed of the stuff of dying stars, that the great clock goes only clock-wise, and that we are born and we die according to that Second Law which existed before we ever gave it its juridical identity or a sequence number.

It matters to us, if we are writing and reading this."

Meet Vivek - A homeless Prophet?

After seeing this video,I wanted to know more about the source - The following was found in 'Zachary Wolk’s blog' :

"We were looking for interesting Street performers to share with our TCTV audience when we encountered Vivek. Nobody is aware of his heritage, career history, child history or anything like that - what we ARE sure of is that this man is Enlightened, I have quoted Vivek dozens if not hundreds of times since meeting him, the nature of this video is that Brian and I were just kids fucking with a homeless person - HOWEVER, his words, being captured on video has given us the great fortunate opportunity to re-visit the experience, and I've gone back several times to interact with this supernatural force... he has changed most people that think about what he's trying to communicate rather than writing him off in the first instant."

Neuro-linguistic programming

"Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is based on the idea that with our senses we are only able to perceive a small part of the world. Our view of the world is filtered by our experience, beliefs, values and assumptions. We act and feel based on our perception of the world rather than the real world. NLP teaches that language and behaviors (whether functional or dysfunctional) are highly structured, and that this structure can be 'modeled' or copied into a reproducible form."

Alternative Cosmologies and Altered States

Transcending the Control System: True Reality Creation.

Like a stuck rudder, programs or surrogate motivators make it difficult to get one’s “boat” traveling in the right direction. Moving forward anyway creates friction, which eventually heats and dissolves the programs, but not without causing some discomfort. Progressing without pain can only happen in two ways: either you have already evolved to the approaching level and are merely retracing your steps, or you are struggling with a fun attitude.

The Meaning of Life - FAQ.

We don't have direct access to the real meaning of life.  But whatever it is, it's a good guess that the Minds on the other side of Singularity have a better chance of achieving it, so the Singularity is the interim meaning of life.  You don't have to know what the meaning of life is in order to work towards it.

Throughout history, the Biosurvival System has been attached to the tribe. Since tribalism has broken down and civilization has gotten more and more abstract, the biosurvival urge has hitched to "Survival Tickets", what we call money. It's not just Americans, it's everybody in the industrial world that is money-mad. We don't have tribes, we don't have extended families, we don't even have families anymore- so everybody's biosurvival drive is attached to money.

Who is the 'you'in 'You Create Your Own Reality'

Jane’s “idea constructions” weren’t a new concept, but rather a contemporary translation of a perennial truth. For example, the Idealist philosophers in the West from Plato to Plotinus, Shelling, Fichte, and Hegel all saw the physical world as a construction by a hidden source domain. Plato’s cave is a famous metaphor that compares human perception to viewing shadows on a wall, while the source “light” lies “outside” the cave.

The Basics of Quantum Healing

So what's the real nature of the world? What's it really like? We can't trust the senses. They give us a very distorted view. They break up that wholeness into a small fragment and we call it reality. We happen to agree about it. We even call it "objective reality" and we have a whole methodology that we call "science" to explore that . If you really understand what science is, then science at least until now has not been a method for exploring the truth. Science has been a method for exploring our current map of what we think the truth is. And the map is not the territory.

Alternative Cosmologies and Altered States

In transpersonal experiences, it is possible to transcend the usual limitations of the body, ego, space, and linear time. The disappearance of spatial boundaries can lead to authentic and convincing identifications with other people, animals of different species, plant life, and even inorganic materials and processes. One can also transcend the temporal boundaries and experience episodes from the lives of one’s human and animal ancestors, as well as collective, racial, and karmic memories.

Alan Watts - Beat Zen, Square Zen ...

There was never a spiritual movement without its excesses and distortions. The experience of awakening which truly constitutes Zen is too timeless and universal to be injured. The extremes of beat Zen need alarm no one since, as Blake said, "the fool who persists in his folly will become wise." As for square Zen, "authoritative" spiritual experiences have always had a way of wearing thin, and thus of generating the demand for something genuine and unique which needs no stamp.

Any of us, at any moment, to the extent we fall into our unconscious and become entranced by the reality-creating function of our own mind, become bewitched by our own projections and the meanings we imbue them with and fall prey to ADS. Organelle -Metaphors of ‘what the Sun is’

The Sun is not an exploding ball of gas. It’s something we lost a generally accurate concept of thousands of years ago. The concept we lost was not academic or scientific — it was relational. A slightly better metaphor of the Sun might be something like ‘living source of that from which knowers and knowledge are spawned.’

Waking the Dreamer

From going from the ordinary state of perceiving the world to an extraordinary state of perceiving the world, I would think, so this is what it’s really like! Of course the next day when I was back in the usual state, comparing the two, I realized, of course, that wasn’t what it was like and this is not what it’s like. They’re both mental models or simulations. It’s something that was very important for me in terms of understanding the power of the mind and seeing how just changing some of the operations parameters in the perceptual system could lead to a radically different view of the world.

God's playing a new game. (From WIE.)

The point is that these are authentic spiritual experiences, but they are culturally molded. And if somebody’s taking their spiritual experience and saying, “This is universally true,” they’re lying. It’s culturally created and molded, yet it doesn’t look like that to the person having the experience. So they’re caught in one version of the myth of the given. A scientist is caught in the same thing. If a scientific materialist says, “Anything I can see in the sensori-motor world is real because that’s what’s really given,” he or she is also caught. It isn’t given; it’s constructed.

Osho speaks on ego

Our whole life, the search for money, power, prestige, this and that, is nothing but a search for new props, a search for new supports, to somehow keep the fiction going. And all the time you know death is coming. Whatsoever you make, death is going to destroy it. But still one goes on hoping against hope -- maybe everybody else dies, but not you.

In the Presence of the Past.  Rupert Sheldrake

Well, certainly the idea that memories aren't stored in the brain opens the way for a new debate or new perspective on the question of survival of death. Most people assume memories are stored in the brain, simply because this is the mechanistic paradigm that's very rarely challenged. There's hardly any evidence for memory storage in the brain, as I show in my book, and what evidence there is could be interpreted better in terms of the brain as a tuning system, tuning into its own past. So that we can gain access to our own memories by tuning into our own past states. The brain is more like a TV receiver than like a tape recorder or a video recorder.

But then I realised: we might do it then, but...we also can and do it now.

Organelle - Cognitive Activism

There are a lot of interesting and unexplored questions relating to the rise and embodiment of complex representational sentience in our species. Some of them have to do with ‘what had to occur elsewhere for this to happen and sustain itself?’, and others that I am fond of pursuing have to do with ‘is there a better sort?’. In other words — are there existing examples of more intelligent intelligence, and more sentient sentience — than the human models and examples we are accustomed to?

Seth speaks on dreams

Individual life, or the life of the present individual, could be legitimately compared to the dream of the entity. While the individual suffers and enjoys his given number of years, these years are but a flash to the entity, the entity is concerned with these years in the same manner that you are concerned with your dreams. As you give purpose and organization to your dreams, and as you obtain insight and satisfaction from your dreams through they involve only a part of your life, so the entity to some extent directs and gives purpose and organization to his personalities during their existence, And so does the entity obtain insights and satisfactions from his existing personalities, although no one takes up all of his attentions.

Interview : The Self Aware Universe

Now, the opposite view is that everything starts with consciousness. That is, consciousness is the ground of all being. In this view, consciousness imposes "downward causation." In other words, our free will is real. When we act in the world we really are acting with causal power. This view does not deny that matter also has causal potency—it does not deny that there is causal power from elementary particles upward, so there is upward causation—but in addition it insists that there is also downward causation. It shows up in our creativity and acts of free will, or when we make moral decisions. In those occasions we are actually witnessing downward causation by consciousness.

The power of thought - from 'Star Stuffs'

'How to slow down time' by Anne Brewer

Imagine combining the law of diminishing years and the quickening of the Earth's heartbeat. No wonder we feel like runners on a treadmill as we plow through each speedily passing day! It's no surprise that life is stressful in this fast-paced mode. Let's examine the average forty-year-old: If we compare the rate of passing time today, for that forty-year-old, to that same person at the age of five, they are living approximately five and a half times faster than they did in childhood. That means that each day equates to five and a half days thirty-five years ago.

Light, Matter and the Zero-Point Field

But let's take this even one step further. If it is the underlying realm of light that is the fundamental reality propping up our physical universe, let us ask ourselves how the universe of space and time would appear from the perspective of a beam of light. The laws of relativity are clear on this point. If you could ride a beam of light as an observer, all of space would shrink to a point, and all of time would collapse to an instant. In the reference frame of light, there is no space and time.

Alan Watts - The Joyous Cosmology

Decision can be completely paralyzed by the sudden realization that there is no way of having good without evil, or that it is impossible to act upon reliable authority without choosing, from your own inexperience, to do so. If sanity implies madness and faith doubt, am I basically a psychotic pretending to be sane, a blithering terrified idiot who manages, temporarily, to put on an act of being self-possessed? I begin to see my whole life as a masterpiece of duplicity—the confused, helpless, hungry, and hideously sensitive little embryo at the root of me having learned, step by step, to comply, placate, bully, wheedle, flatter, bluff, and cheat my way into being taken for a person of competence and reliability. For when it really comes down to it, what do any of us know?

Peter Ragnar - 'If You're Conscious, How Can You Die?'

It's very simple to see how people kill their bodies with their thoughts—it's a product of their unconsciousness of causes and effects. If we're conscious of our thoughts—I mean luminously conscious of our thoughts—those thoughts then impregnate the cellular structure of our body in a way that is very, very difficult to explain. When you have an abundance of life force inside you, it pours out of your eyes. It comes out of the palms of your hands as heat, as healing heat. It radiates as if you swallowed the sun, and you are different. Now, with that type of dynamic and powerful energy inside of you, how can you die?

“It portrays the new consciousness seeing itself unique and separate, evolving from the tree of life and therefore able to examine its fruits, to see itself for the first time as different from others, like the serpent who crawled upon the surface of the earth. Man came forth as a creature of distinctions.

In so doing he quite purposefully detached himself, in your terms now, from the body of his planet in a new way. A part of him very naturally yearned for that primeval (louder) knowing unknowingness that had to be abandoned, in which all things were given – no judgments or distinctions were necessary, and all responsibilities were biologically foreordained.

“He saw himself as rising above the serpent, which was a symbol of unconscious knowledge. Yet the serpent would always mystify and attract man, even though he must stand upon its head, symbolically speaking, and rise from its knowledge.

“With the birth of this consciousness came conscious responsibility for the fruits of the planet. Man became the caretaker.”
--- Seth (The Nature of Personal Reality, session 646.)

“The fact is that the whole self is constantly experiencing data from all of the inner senses. The inner ego is of course aware of this. The subconscious is sometimes aware of this, and the outer ego is aware of very little. I have explained the reasons for this in past sessions. The outer ego must concentrate much of its energy toward survival in and manipulation of the outer camouflage world [Framework 1]. This world has already been created by the inner self, and its continuing existence is determined by the constant vigilance of the inner self [i.e. the inner self is primarily causal, not the body or brain]."

“Only when a certain level of confidence is reached can the outer ego afford to become familiar with these inner workings, at least on your plane [Framework 1]. Otherwise you would falter. As a rule, even though the whole self is capable of organizing the data from all of the inner senses, the subconscious can rarely receive such communications full blast; and the outer ego, concerned as it is with camouflage pattern, and really born [co-created] to deal with camouflage patterns, simply could not stand the shock of realization that a complete set of inner senses would bring."

---- Jane Roberts / Seth

transcend, end trance (on exhibit at the hive gallery in L.A.)
And as much as we, as you and I, might wish to transcend mere translation and find an authentic transformation, nonetheless translation itself is an absolutely necessary and crucial function for the greater part of our lives.

Those who cannot translate adequately, with a fair amount of integrity and accuracy, fall quickly into severe neurosis or even psychosis: the world ceases to make sense—the boundaries between the self and the world are not transcended but instead begin to crumble. This is not breakthrough but breakdown; not transcendence, but disaster.

But at some point in our maturation process, translation itself, no matter how adequate or confident, simply ceases to console. No new beliefs, no new paradigm, no new myths, no new ideas, will staunch the encroaching anguish. Not a new belief for the self, but the transcendence of the self altogether, is the only path that avails.
